One more hint I have to add:

NEVER try to run a Gecko from a regulated power supply. A friend of mine
did and fried his Gecko immediately at the first power up. I think, what
happened was that the motor began to oscillate due to the wrong
gain/damp adjustment. A regulated power supply can source enough current
for the gecko while holding the voltage exactly constant. But only few
of them are designed to _sink_ current, when the motor is acting as
generator which it does repeatedly when it is oscillating. So the
voltage rises in an uncontrolled way overloading the power transistors
of the Gecko. We replaced the FETS but with no luck. Seems that the 5V
regulator was fried, too.

So always add al _large_ capacitor to the DC supply. I even add a
seperate "energy absorber" (large Zener diode or
Zener-transistor-resistor combination) to my setups because I don't
trust the capacitor alone.
