One thing I have always done is connect to a power supply that is the
minimum voltage I can use (24 vdc with many of the drives) and set the
amperage very low. One I know that everything is working as it should I
then switch to a more optimum power supply and bring the amperage up.
Helps provide a lot of protection from dumb mistakes. Everything will
work fine with the lower power levels just at reduced performance
(slower acceleration, lower max speeds). I see that lots of people are
trying to drive everything at the maximum voltage and amperage they can.
It is frequently not necessary and can lead to some expensive results. I
currently am running my Bridgeport Series II (considerably bigger and
heavier than a manual Bridgeport) on Gecko G320 drives at 60 vdc. Yes I
could accelerate faster and get a higher rapid if I increased the supply
to 80 vdc, but heck I am rapiding at 120 ipm and can accelerate to that
speed in just over 1/2 second.
