There are possibilities for doing very accurate homing using an index
channel. (either move until home switch trips, then until the index
pulse comes, or just electrically AND the index and home switch).

Also, it can be used as a slower tachometer than the higher resolution
pulses.

There may be more, but I'm no expert (yet :) )
