Rutex drives, which I think you said you are using, do not support
an index. They do take differential output encoders which are
more reliable, especially in noisy environments and with longer cable
runs. I would look into the diff encoders and get them if at all
possible. Rutex even makes a board, the R516, to convert a single
ended encoder to differential output. It is pretty well documented
that the #1 problem with servo drives not working right stems from
the encoder feedback.
