who also has a very accurate means of testing torgue.
The big deal with steppers also comes into play about how ham fisted
we are. dragging the rotors and stators against the case and magnets
is almost a forgone conslusion unless you have some means of
maintaining the alignment axialy.
The bits of scrapings then effect the health of the motor and tend to
bind and scrape and make more bits that bind and scrape....
as for 5/8 shafts and encoders.....
Many of us with lathes would be more than happy to pull the motor
apart and turn down the shaft. Others would just make a sleve with
a 1/4 post to slip over the shaft. still others would drill and tap
and thread in a 1/4 shaft, while others would just drill and ream and
use some bearing locking stuff to permanently attach the small shaft.
It's part of the fun part of the whole machine building process.
