I am in the process of converting a normal 12V wiper motor to a servo. In
fact I have ran it on a Gecko drive already. It max's out the Gecko @ 20A
and 36V (~600Watt) Even putting a load on, the motor and Gecko stays cool. I
chose the wiper motor because it has a roller bearing and is designed for
100% duty cycle. You do need to make a modification internally due to one
brush being grounded on the casing. I removed the worm gear section, and cut
the back casing to expose the shaft, drilling it in the lathe to press fit a
small stub in there to mount the optical encoder. I also machined down the
worm on the front shaft to mount a timing pulley. Ugly, but it works great,
A (POWERFUL) servo for $10.
The starter motor has an extremely low duty cycle, no roller bearings (your
mileage might vary) and the windings are extremely high current.
