Only command driven drivers (AX, SX, Zeta 6xxx, etc.) use a command set, the
others use step and direction like the AL, AH, Zeta4, S Series.
The A series drivers require high-inductance motors with the S and Zeta's
taking on anything.

You're right step and direction isn't going anywhere, but at the rates Mach
can produce you're stuck using full/half step motors.

I haven't checked it out, but don't Compumotor drives need a specific
serial command set to operate? When step/direction works with everything
since it is standardized. So basically if Art decided to program for just
Compumotors, then the price of used compumotor stuff would go through the
roof. It's also usually a big pain to get industrial servo drives working
properly. Some manufacturers even make you purchase the setup software. I
can't see step/direction going anywhere for a long long time. It works for
almost any application and doesn't need a special setup. Rutex does have
some new serial command drives, but I haven't heard if anyone will support
that standard....
