I'm researching CNC for my new mill. However, if you're interested in what
I've done http://www.lonestarobservatory.org and it's far more accurate than
any CNC machine. One axis on the scope require positioning and repeatability
to withing +/- 2 microns.

Obsolete overnight? Haven't run into that yet, besides if it breaks, get on
eBay and get another one. If you don't want to use the indexer at least use
the drivers and motors. Some servos even take step and direction.

sounds like you like something that can be obsolete overnight, all these
motors with drive attatched and propietary softwear to run them sounds fine
till it breaks and you need another motor/drive and the company that made
