I feel the same way, I want to KNOW where the machine is, not trust some
blind box to say it put it there, but I can't VERIFY it! That's why I made
my PWM servo controller board and PWM servo amplifiers to go with EMC,
which IS capable of handling encoder feedback, displaying it on the screen,
and using it in the servo calculations. You can manually deflect the
machine's
handles and see the displayed position change (in the 4th decimal place.)

I've been putting these on everything from Taig mills to Bridgeports.
If you have handwheels, you can switch back and forth between CNC
and manual mode, and in manual EMC becomes a DRO. (I don't have
handwheels on my Bridgeport retrofit, and I've gotten pretty used to doing
it all with CNC, but some people like the force feedback of the manual
control, too.)
