Well, I've already done it with an FPGA that connects to the parallel port.
It does 4 axes, and can be daisy-chained for more axes. It works under EMC,
and I talked to Art about supporting it on Mach3 or so, bit it didn't go
very
far. His big problem is that you can't use floating point hardware in
the driver,
so the calculations from position to steps could be tricky.

Well, they have a version for the Gecko G100 controller, which basically
does what
you propose. But, it is not closed-loop to the computer, either, the
loop closure
is in the Rabbit CPU.
