Re: DeskNC Windows version

Hi.

I have been following this thread with some dismay. The writer's
assumption is one should do everything themselves if one is to keep
the hobby pure. If electronics are needed then one should educate
themselves in it enough to build their own drives; somehow that
experience would make someone more self sufficient and whole.

I think there is a paradox here.

The PC you use is commercialy manufactured. Why not breadboard your
own and cut out the WinTel monopoly? It would also be a hell of an
education in multilayer controlled impedence PCB layout technology
you could be proud of to have mastered.

How about grinding your own leadscrews? A good lathe and a lot of
hard earned knowledge would turn out a workable example.

But why stop there? To be a true purist you should personally mine
your own iron ore, smelt it, pour it into castings, machine them and
create your own end mill.

While your'e at it, gather some quartz sand, reduce it to silicon
ingots, saw them and create your own integrated circuits and power
devices.

The homemade recipes for resistors and capacitors I leave for you to
find.

The purpose for the sarcasm is not not meant to be hurtful, rather it
is meant to re-examine the inter-relationship we all have with each
other.

Each of us do what we do best and that inevitably means
specialization. Human knowledge is simply to broad for any one person
to encompass it all. You could have done it up to the 16th century
but not beyond that.

Everyone has a dream and a goal of what they want to achieve. My
drives are a small part of that, and I understand in other people's
dreams of what they want to do, they are only a means to an end.
People simply do not want to be sidetracked designing a drive when it
is only a minor building block.

My pleasure is in designing drives; it's what I've done my entire
professional life. I have always tried to share freely and help
others in questions relating to what I'm good at. It is my way of
giving back.

I wouldn't dream of trying to build a CNC machine myself, though I
certainly could use one. I am in awe of people who have the knowledge
and experience to do that. I also respect their desire to buy a
finished drive rather than build one themselves.

I simply do what I do best just like you do what you do best.
Commerce is simply the exchange of our best efforts.
