Guys:
I'm in the same boat as you are, but am probably a lot newer at it. Before I
retired, I was involved in building equipment to manufacture and test some
consumer products. In that capacity, I've been involved with cameras,
stepper motor systems, servo motor system, computers, some hardware design
and software design. When I retired, I bought myself a Sherline lathe and
mill and decided to learn something about machining, with an eye towards
building a brass locomotive of some sorts.
While I want to work with the tools in "manual" mode right now to learn how
to use them, I can see some of the advantages of CNC for some things and can
see myself adding steppers (or servos) to my tools as time progresses. I
find this list quite interesting, especially when it gets into discussions
about home brew items. Quite frankly, when I get ready for adding CNC, I'm
not sure how much of it I will build myself or how much software I'll write
for it. Through following this list, I'll be better equipped to make my
decision. The bottom line - we need all different points of view and frank
discussions of the pros and cons of each.

Hi Tom, Matt and the list,
Good thoughts! I think MOST of us are that way. We each have our
favorite topics, topics we are interested in, topics we can't even
follow, and topics we no nothing about, but want to learn.
For myself, I support my family and pursuits by writing software and
designing a little hardware for embedded products and systems.
