Jim,

Sorry for the reply delay, but I've only just spotted your question
on the end of this reply !

What I did was to make a 'disconnector' between all the air lines
that go to the tape reader - cannot remember how many as it was years
ago, but LOADS!

With no tape loaded air can pass though all holes and Mr Moog reads
all "1's". The disconnector has a very small air valve on each line
and a box of electronics contains drivers for each valve (24v iirc)
The drivers are fed off the stages of a shift register with as many
places as there are valves, and I used two parallel port pins (data
and clock) to clock data along the shift register. It worked very
well.

When I scrapped the Moog I saved the interface as it represented
hours of my time on the off chance it could be re-used by someone
else - still have it in a box in the loft !
