Gibs are the mechanism used to take up slack in dovetail and box way
systems. On Bridgeport mills, there are tapered sections of one of the
dovetail ways, and a tapered gib is inserted into this area. When the
gib is moved sideways in the way, it will tighten the fit. These are used
in direct sliding way systems. I don't think they are used in linear
bearing systems.
