Jtfrimenko mis-stated something he prob'ly understands...
It *should* read ...and is sliding on WAYS, which are adjusted for
proper tightness and slide-ability by GIBS.
Gibs are the adjustable part in a sliding dovetail or box way
assembly. They allow the machine to be adjusted at manufacture, and
after it wears. Gibs are usually metal or hi-tech plastic. Many are
flat and adjust by screws which press them against the sliding
surface. Others (like sherline and the import mill/drills) are a
tapered parallelogram, and adjust by sliding into or out of a similar
taper in the tool body/base/table.
BTW, they are pronounced hard-g(like gorilla) Gib, as opposed to JIB,
like the foresail of a boat or ship.
