If you want a good spring temper...use lead!
First you melt a pot of lead, then you submerge the part in the melted lead.
How long will depend on the size of the part. At least that's the way I
learned to make flat gun springs.
Simple, effective and cheap! Just be sure to do the lead melting in a well
ventilated area.
