When I worked as a machine designer in Detroit, most of the big transfer
machines used tapered (wedge shaped) gibs. Some of these had tapered slots
in the castings and used pairs of tapered gibs. Some used a combination of
both.
However, all gibs are not wedge shaped! Almost all the lathes and mills
I've ever seen used in small shops use flat gibs and are adjusted with
several screws. The biggest reason for this is probably cost. It's a lot
cheaper to mill a straight slot and make provisions for a few adjustment
screws than it is to machine tapered slots, matching gibs and make the more
complex provisions for gib adjustment.
