Thanks Les, Jon, and Bill for your replies. Motors are mysterious
lumps of metal and wires that require "math" to understand. Quite a
combination in a little package.

WAYS.... that's the word I should have used. Think of a dresser
drawer. It "slides" in and out of the case and if the fit is very
sloppy, can jam. Gibs are added in machine tools to take-up the
unwanted clearance between the sliding members. Filing cabinets, on
the other hand, typically have some kind of ball bearings supporting
the drawers. These are the two types of linear machine bearings:
sliding and rolling.
