Covered ways are a good idea, but the covering can be an attachment.
The X ways on a Bridgeport are fairly well covered by the table. The Y
ways, however, are mostly exposed, except where the saddle is sitting
right at the moment. Tools are dropped on these ways every once and
a while. I finally got a cover set for my machine. It has a big rubber
'apron' that covers the Y ways behind the saddle, and the upper part of the Z
ways for the knee. It has a smaller, corrugated rubber part that is wider than
the entire knee, and goes in front to cover the exposed Y ways. You
could probably buy one of these sets and cut it to appropriate size to
protect many different styles of machine.
