Rather than guessing, I made up a simple model of the part you specify, a
block 1.625x2.5, a 1.125" hole in the center and two .1875" holes
on opposite ends. It was not clear from your description whether the .1875"
holes were through the face of the material or from the ends to the center.
I made the model both ways, then processed them with Skeinforge (the
toolpathing software the RepRap uses).
The full output of each run is pasted below, is pasted below, but the gist
of it is that these parts will cost about $5.25 each and take about 15
minutes to run-- note Skeinforge does not know the acceleration of your
machine, so the runtime (and therefore machine time) is typically lower than
the actual time, so I increased each by 50% to give more accurate numbers.
If the holes are from the side, it is actually slightly faster to print,
which is nice since the holes from the end would add to the
cost significantly with any other common manufacturing method.
This assumes you are printing .5mm layers at .9mm extrusion width. which is
larger than most people would want for hobby use, but for purely functional
parts is quite reasonable. It also assume you are printing at 100mm/sec,
which is not terribly difficult to achieve, and many
people print considerably higher than that on a standard RepRap. Machine
time cost is valued at $25/hour and material cost is at $25kg (that should
actually be a bit higher, probably $35.kg, but considering the low material
cost for the part the difference is basically irrelevant).
It really depends on how many you need to know whether this is cost
effective, but it is certainly possible that it would be. The other thing to
consider-- you won't just make this one part. Once you have a 3d printer,
you suddenly start finding all sorts of interesting parts you can make with
it, so you will probably justify the cost pretty quickly.
