I don't actually have control of the project so this isn't my call.

Were it my choice I would much rather get what we have working than keep buying newer versions of hardware until I luck into a complete mutually compatible set (although I will admit that as time progresses the amount of luck required will go down). Now that we have the nozzle working, there is nothing wrong with the hardware, neither mechanical nor electronic, that needs to be fixed.

The problem boils down to finding a set of firmware, host PC driver software, and skein software that work together (possibly using a customized set of parameters). Unfortunately, our hardware is already considered obsolete so it is not clear if appropriate firmware changes will ever appear for it (unless we do them ourselves). It irks me greatly to have to replace working hardware in order to get working software.
