Take a look at openstreetmap.org ...
And other what I would call 'free' projects such as Libreoffice - which is
probably a good example of sticking two fingers up at commercial interests.

CNC wise, there is a growing library of useful free material, but I have to
agree that there is not quite the same level of cooperation in some areas.
Fortunately the level of 'rip-off' has been going down over the years, and even
some of the poorer quality suppliers have learn't and are still around simply by
providing a much higher level of service - and product.

The next step on a number of projects is the provision of user improved
documentation and perhaps even side projects to provide alternatives to some
parts that are used. I've not investigated 3D printing myself yet, the CNC Taig
mill does me at the moment, but I've been following a few threads that are
working on attaching the necessary hardware to a conventional mill base. All of
the mistakes are being recorded and passed on which is exactly what I view as
being the 'open source' spirit. Cooperation rather than confrontation ...
