Phil,

Open Source does not mean understandable by you, or even well documented.

Let's extend your analogy: I run an ad for an open house, I live on the
third floor of a historic building which is not handicapped accessible.
Does this make it other than an open house? After all, you need skills
and abilities to get in.

I know that I don't know everything and my skill set is limited. Just
because I can't understand a chemical engineering design does not mean
that someone with different skills can't. My (or your) lack of skills
means the door is inaccessible, even if it is just a single stair step up.
